Year 7 Geography Trip to Italy
Just before the Easter holidays, forty-nine excited Year 7 Prep School students gathered at Birmingham International Airport to fly to Rome, Italy. After landing and dropping their bags off at the hotel, the group travelled on the metro underground to the ߣÍÃÊÓƵ Steps where they started their guided tour of Piazza de Popolo, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona. Pupils and staff stopped for some gelato before returning to the hotel. On the evening the enjoyed sampling authentic Italian pizza at a local restaurant.
Day two involved an early start for a tour of the Vatican City, St Peter’s Square, Roman Forum, Coliseum, Palatine Hill and Piazza Navona. The day was finished with lasagna and tiramisu at a local restaurant. Day three involved another early rise but an opportunity to rest on the three hour coach journey to the ancient Roman ruin of Herculaneum, buried with Java during the 79AD eruption. After continuing with their journey to Sorrento, the tour party checked into their second hotel before having a lovely Italian meal at a restaurant tucked into one of the small side streets in Sorrento town. The day was concluded with some evening shopping.
Day 4 started with a visit to Mt Vesuvius National Park. The drive to the drop off point takes in some majestic views of the Bay of Naples where there are breathtaking views out towards the Island of Capri, Ischia and the City of Naples. The hike to the summit was enjoyable and the students stood on an active volcano with steam emitting from its flanks. The day also included driving to the Port of Naples where they took a hydrofoil across the Bay of Naples back to their base in Sorrento. The children had an opportunity to play on the beach before having a tour of the town, more shopping to buy gifts and a visit to a local pizzeria to make some delicious home made pizzas.
On day five, pupils and staff checked out of their accommodation and drove to Naples Airport to catch their flight home. This was Mr Jones’ last ever trip before he retires from teaching at the end of the Summer Term and he wishes to thank the pupils for being great ambassadors for the School. Thanks also go to all the staff who gave the students a magical time; Mr Barratt, Mrs James, Mrs Sitlu, Mrs Townsend and Mrs Whiting.
